Eads Bridge is the oldest bridge on the Mississippi River and the first bridge spanning the Mississippi at St. Louis. It is only fitting that it should be part of my Iconic St. Louis series. Designed and built by James Eads in 1874, it was a major engineering feat, as it was the largest bridge built at that time and the very first bridge made of steel. Eads Bridge played a significant role in the age of the railroad as the Mississippi River had become a barrier to train traffic. It also ushered in a new steel age for engineering, architecture and manufacturing.
